Certain AS & A Level syllabuses include separate entry options that carry forward the whole AS and others that carry forward individual components’ marks.
Please be aware that an AS result achieved by carrying forward the mark for a single AS component cannot then be carried forward to a subsequent series. We refer to an AS result that is produced by completing one component in the current series and carrying forward the mark for the coursework component from a previous series as a 'mixed series' AS result.
We confirm that a mixed series AS result cannot be carried forward in section 5.4.2 of our Carry-forward regulations supplement, which can be found on this page of our website under 'Key documents for exams officers'.
In addition to the normal AS carry forward entry options, the following syllabuses include these 'coursework carry forward' options as well:
- AS & A Level Art and Design (9479)
- AS & A Level Design & Technology (9705)
- AS & A Level Digital Media & Design (9481)
- AS & A Level Drama (9482)
- AS & A Level Global Perspectives & Research (9239)
- AS & A Level Media Studies (9607)
- AS & A Level Music (9483)
- AS & A Level Travel & Tourism (9395)
There are two different ways that marks from these syllabuses' coursework component(s) can be carried forward to a future series, which are outlined below.
Carrying forward only the AS Level and/or A Level coursework component
- Only the coursework component marks are carried forward
- The coursework can be AS Level and/or A2 Level
- No other non-coursework component marks are carried forward
- The candidate must take all other non-coursework components of the syllabus in the current series.
An AS result achieved in this way cannot be carried forward to a subsequent series because the components of the AS Level were taken in different series.
Carrying forward an AS Level which includes a coursework component to complete an A Level
- The AS Level consists of a coursework component and at least one other component
- The marks from all AS Level components are carried forward as a complete AS Level
- The marks from all of the AS Level components must come from the same original series
- The candidate must take all the A2 components of the syllabus in the current series.
In all cases our usual carry forward rules apply, in particular:
- The series in which the coursework was originally submitted must be within 13 months of the current series
- There must have been no changes to the syllabus since the original coursework was submitted which prevent carry forward to the current version of the syllabus.
