Your learners may all study the same text for their critical essay; there is no obligation that each learner must answer a unique question for either coursework assignment. However, it is often worthwhile offering a number of tasks from which learners can choose. The World Literature syllabus aims to promote the importance of an informed personal response, so essays from the same teaching group which make the same points and use the same quotations in the same order may not gain high marks if learners do not go beyond the taught content. Emphasise to your learners that they should think for themselves rather than reproduce a standard response. Learners may, if they wish, propose their own assignments, though you should check the wording of tasks in order to ensure that they meet the assessment criteria.
