Can a student write his/her Reflection Paper or Individual Report in their native language and then used Google translate in order to submit their work in English?

We would not approve the wholesale use of Google Translate to convert an entire essay into English.  This does not mean that candidates cannot use it at all, in the same way that they might use a dictionary to find less familiar vocabulary, but it’s use should be to help a phrase or expression and not the entirety of the written work. We take this approach because:

  • There is a risk that it is self-penalising because Google Translate will not necessarily produce the clearest or most appropriate English expression.
  • The syllabus and assessment materials are only available in English and writing the entire piece in another language runs against the intention and spirit of the syllabus.
  • Any references cited must be available in English and therefore it is assumed the candidate has engaged with them in English as part of the research.
  • Candidates are not expected to produce perfect use of the English language.  Communication refers to the clarity of arguments, evidence and perspectives.
