For syllabus years 2026 and 2027, there is no requirement for students to compare texts when submitting assignments for coursework – students each year attain top marks by writing about texts singularly. However, there is nothing in the mark scheme to prevent students from comparing texts - when done well it can effectively improve a response.
For syllabus years 2028 - 2030, candidates submit a portfolio of two essays. Both coursework essays must involve comparison rather than single-text analysis.
- Comparing texts – One text must be drama. The second text may be prose or drama.
- Comparing poems – Candidates submit an essay based on the comparison of two poems.
