How strict is the word count in each component?

For all questions where a response length is provided, this is for guidance. Candidates will not be penalised for writing more or less than any word count guidance provided. However, it may be self-penalising for candidates to write significantly more or less than is recommended; this is because, for example, short work may not have the necessary development or detail, whereas long work may lose focus and concision.
