What is the recommended word count for the coursework assignments?

For syllabus years 2026 and 2027, a word limit of 600–1200 words is recommended, including quotations, but excluding any bibliography.

For syllabus years 2028 - 2030, the recommended word limit for the comparing texts assignment is 1500 and the comparing poems assignment is 1000 words (excluding any bibliography).

Although penalties are not applied, very short assignments are self-penalising as they do not provide enough evidence of a detailed knowledge or detailed analysis of the writing.
