Paper 2, Section A, Directed writing: What kinds of formats might candidates expected to write in?

All the possible text types which might come up on the Directed Writing are given in the syllabus. Candidates should use, develop and evaluate the information in the text(s) to create a discursive/argumentative/persuasive speech, email, report, letter or article.

Our expectation is that courses which prepare candidates for the 1123 Writing exam would cover these text types and their characteristics. Examiners look for responses which demonstrate an understanding of the conventions and features of the text type they are asked to produce. So, for example, a letter should have a salutation and correct form of valediction; a report might have headings etc.
