What is the difference between IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences Core and Extended?

To take account of differing abilities, there is a choice between Core and Extended papers in IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences. This allows teachers to decide on the most appropriate level of papers for their students.

The Core curriculum is within the ability range of a large majority of students. It provides a full overview of the subject. Students can achieve grades C-C to G-G. On core papers questions are targeted at a standard suitable for candidates across the C to G range.

The Extended curriculum, made up of the Core curriculum and the Supplement, has been designed for the more academically able and leads naturally into higher education or professional training. All grades A*-A* to G-G are available. Questions on extended papers are targeted at a higher standard, suitable for candidates performing in the range A* to E.

The Supplement describes the extra topics or depth which must be added to the Core curriculum to produce the Extended curriculum.

The grades are a double award and the grades available are:

Grades Available

Core Curriculum                           C-C, D-D, E-E, F-F, G-G

Extended Curriculum                 A*-A*, A-A, B-B, C-C, D-D, E-E, F-F, G-G

Students who fail to meet the minimum satisfactory standard for Grade G-G will be ungraded.

If a student is currently in the ‘middle’ of the performance range A* to G, only the Extended tier will offer the higher grades the student may be capable of achieving. Students are not able to achieve above a C-C for their syllabus grade if they are entered for the Core curriculum.
