Can I adapt and edit a play so that it works for a smaller group?

It is possible to edit/adapt plays for use, but these should be minor edits as editing presents its own challenges. The edited extract should be substantially the same as the published version with relatively minor edits.

It can be possible to adapt dialogue so that it makes sense. If you decide to do this and make an adaptation, it’s worth deciding first which character is the easiest to remove. This sounds obvious but a situation could occur where a fairly central character gets taken out in favour of another who is less integral. If the centre wants to see a list of plays performed by candidates, this is included in the Principal Moderator’s report each year (available on the School Support Hub).
