What are the software requirements for AS & A Level Computer Science?

In respect of programming software, we do not stipulate any specific IDE/source code editors that candidates must use. Candidates are free to choose any industry standard and widely used and popular IDE/source code editor to write their program code for one of the permitted three programming languages: Python, Java, and Visual Basic (.net).

In the practical test for paper 4 (9618) we do however, state that the IDE/source code editor does not have any pre-prepared templates or have any extra library files i.e. it should be a clean basic setup without any additional plugins/library files or any work the candidate has created before the test.

This means that only standard support extensions necessary for programming in the chosen language are allowed. For example, if a center chooses to use Visual Studio Code, installing standard language support extensions, such as those for Python, is acceptable and would be considered a ‘clean setup’. The same applies to Java and VB.NET.z
