A student may manufacture the final product using a 3D printed component. The syllabus recognises 3D printing as an accepted computer‑aided manufacturing method, and there is no requirement for an additional version of the product to be handmade.
The key requirement is that the candidate physically makes the product, with the chosen manufacturing method being appropriate to the design brief and design specification. The use of 3D printing should be clearly justified, and the candidate must demonstrate effective design development, planning, testing, evaluation and safe working practices.
