Are candidates entitled to extra time if their English is poor?

Candidates may be allowed to use a simple translation dictionary in Cambridge IGCSE examinations except in the case of language examinations or where specifically prohibited in the syllabus. Please refer to section 5.1.6.2 of the Cambridge Handbook available here for further details.

We are unable to approve extra time for candidates on the basis that English is their second language. Cambridge is an international organisation and English is the second language of many of our candidates. All candidates must be assessed according to the same marking criteria and following the same regulations, so that grades and certificates have the same validity.
